Do you remember back when you first started paper crafting? Do you remember some of the first tools you bought? I can tell you that the very first tool I bought before I was ready to dive head-first into stamping, was a paper crimper. I was certain that I would be able to create tons of really cute cards with that handy-dandy paper crimper!
If I'm completely honest, that crimper didn't get a whole lot of use back in those early days. But I still have that same paper crimper (it's made by Fiskars) and I've pulled it out and put it to good use this week by pairing it up with lots of dies to create my own faux corrugated die cuts! Pre-made corrugated embellies are all the rage these days but they can be expensive. So why not create your own?! With just some kraft card stock, some dies, maybe a bit of ink and that handy-dandy paper crimper, you're good to go!
It's always fun to take on oldie-but-goodie tool (like a paper crimper) and pair it with some new tools (such as the gazillion dies available these days!) to breathe new life into that old tool's life.
In the photo at the top of this post, you can see that I simply die cut a variety of different shapes from kraft card stock. And then, I just ran each shape thru the paper crimper to get that corrugated look. If the shapes are small enough, you can even run several thru the crimper at once. This process literally takes just minutes! BUT, if you want to make them look even a bit more authentic, you can do as I did here, and ink the edges of the die cut just a bit. For the flower on the left, I dragged a vintage touch tea dye ink pad in chai, around the edges of the flower. For the flower on the right, I did the same thing with a fresh snow ink pad. I love how realistic that looks! Just like an old piece of card board.
See? I told you it was super simple! ;)
So first up is a little corrugated banner. What's not to love about a corrugated banner, right? Haha. I started out with a kraft card base and added a strip of Dotty Biscotti patterned paper along the bottom of the card front. Over that, I layered a piece of vintage book print. Yes, I put the book print upside down on purpose. By doing this, I get the "look" of having book print on the card front without the "distraction" of the viewer feeling like they need to read the actual story! Obviously when using book print, there are going to be times when the text that you're using has absolutely nothing to do with the theme of the card. But you still want that book print look, so by adhering the book print upside down, you still get the look you're after without the need to match the story to your card's theme.
A half & half die was used to create the raspberry fizz strip and the "happy day" sentiment from Fillable Frames #5 was stamped in dark chocolate ink.
The banner flags and toppers were die cut with the Banner Builder Collection dies. The little heart was die cut with a Love Lives Here die and the little star was die cut with a die from the Rocket Die collection. A couple of raspberry fizz buttons and some chocolate baker's twine finished things off!
Along the bottom of the card, I added one more strip of patterned paper for another pop of that summer sunrise color.....this paper is from the Distressed Dots collection and I die cut it with the small scalloped border die.
Next up, I used that little flower that I showed you before.....the one I had inked up with some vintage touch tea dye ink. I used the friendly flower die to cut that flower out and added a little pure poppy flower die cut that was cut out with the flower fusion #1 die.
Topping the two card stock flowers is a raspberry fizz button threaded with a bit of chocolate baker's twine. I love that little layered flower. Behind it is some dark chocolate card stock die cut with a Turning a New Leaf die and I added a couple of Dritz straight pins by sticking them into the foam adhesive behind the flower. The "thank you" sentiment is from Fillable Frames #7 and I stamped it on raspberry fizz card stock that was die cut with a Limitless Layers: 2 1/2" circle die.
The cluster of die cuts is adhered to some Damask Designs patterned paper and everything is sitting on a rustic cream card base.
One more card for you today.....this one showcasing a sentiment I put together with a stamp, a die cut "2" and a bit of my hand-writing.
I started out with berry sorbet card stock which I die cut with a mat stack 3 die and on that, I layered a bit of rustic cream card stock that was also cut with the same die. I just trimmed off the top and the bottom of the shape, so that it would layer right over the berry card stock perfectly. The "love you" sentiment is from the Fillable Frames #10 stamp set, stamped in dark chocolate ink. I used a Zig Writer 0.5mm pen in "chocolate" to write the word "pieces" to complete my "love you 2 pieces" sentiment. I also added a little pure poppy baker's twine and a Hero Arts Dot as well as a bit of machine stitching.
A corner chomper was used to round the bottom right hand corner of the card base.
The card base is rustic cream card stock and I added a strip of Sweet Symphony patterned paper followed by a strip of die cut kraft card stock and another piece of Road Trip patterned paper.
All right, so that's it for me today. Have I got you thinking about pulling out that paper crimper and giving it some love again? :) I hope so! If you make your own faux corrugated embellies, be sure to leave a link to your project in the comments section! That way we can all see what you came up with!
