So, yesterday at church there was a guest speaker that gave the sermon rather than our pastor and he talked about acts of kindness. You know, those completely random things we can do for others when they're least expecting it, that might totally make their day. Toward the end of the service, he challenged us to make it a point to do 5 random acts of kindness each day. Maybe buy a drink for the person in line behind you at Starbucks. Maybe send someone a card 'just because'. Maybe pay for the car behind you in line at Taco Bell. Maybe help someone with their rent. Maybe call someone to tell them that you've been thinking about them. It could a million different things, right?
So fast forward just a tad. I had to stay for the second service (because I was singing) but after first service, Bart went to the grocery store and with the other groceries, he also took a dozen red roses to the checkout for me. I know I've told you before that he brings me flowers regularly so I know this isn't news to you, but wait. He gets to the checkout and the woman ringing him up said to him, "I wish I had $8 - I'd buy myself some flowers like these - my husband never gets me flowers." Bart went about paying for the groceries and as he was walking away from the checkout, he remembered the sermon at church and the challenge to do something nice for someone else. So he went back over to the floral dept. and looked for some more flowers. He picked out a dozen white roses and asked the florist in the floral dept. if she'd take his money, go buy the flowers and give them to the checker! She quickly agreed and he stood back out of the way to watch this play out. She bought the flowers from a different checker and then took them over to the lady that had rung him up and gave them to her. The checker put her hands up on her cheeks and was clearly touched. The florist came back to where Bart was standing (out of sight of the checker) to give him his change and to tell him that the checker had been so blessed by his kindness.
The point of this story isn't to brag on my husband. I think I do that all the time as it is, and in fact, he'd probably just as soon I not tell you this story at all. He wasn't out to get any credit for his kindness. The checker didn't even see him after she got her flowers....he just quietly left the store and came home. But he did something that blessed someone else and I have to tell you honestly, that I think HE was more blessed than that checker by what he did.
When he came home from the store, he put my flowers in a vase and even cut one short stem and put it in a glass and set it in the middle of my desk -- the desk that currently looks like a tornado blew thru!! (See photo above) That one tiny act - putting a single rose on my desk where he knew I'd be sitting all afternoon, totally blessed me.
My challenge to you today is to do something nice for someone else, as often as you can. It may seem like a tiny little thing to you, but you just never know when your kindness might be just the thing to turn someone's day around. Bart spent a whopping $6.99 on those flowers, but they not only made her day....they made his.
And so with that challenge, I'm gonna practice what I preach for a second.....not only will I be announcing 1 winner for the blog candy give-away, but I'm also taking the next 4 randomly selected commenters and giving them each a $5 Starbucks gift card. I know $5 isn't a lot, but hey.....you 4 ladies that won, can have a latte on me and I hope that going forward, you'll remember that and do something nice for someone else. It feels great to give!
