Ok, so I have been chomping at the bit to get in the studio and share this project with you today! SO excited about these little button jars!!!! But you'll be proud of me -- I forced myself to get my workout done like a good girl before I came in here to blog! But seriously, doesn't that photo make your crafty heart beat just a little bit faster???? I want to make these in a million different color combos!
So I have to first say that I just discovered Tara Anderson's blog and have been so inspired by her creations that it got my wheels turning about these little button jar tags. (Thanks for the inspiration, Tara!) She's sold quite a few different types of tags w/buttons stitched to them, including some stamped with mason jars, in her Etsy shop and it got me to thinking about Papertrey's new Friendship Jar and Friendship Jar Fillers stamp sets and the coordinating dies. That's when I decided to try out a few of these myself, adding the die cut jars, lids and die cut scalloped toppers. I must say that as these started to take shape I fell in LOVE. Completely smitten, I tell ya! Don't these totally remind you of the little cards that buttons are sold on, in the notions department at crafty stores? Except these have that awesome vintage twist!
So are you wondering what in the world you could do with these little jewels?? I've got a few ideas up my sleeve......
Of course, the first thing you can do with them is use them on cards or scrapbook layouts. Here, I went for a pure poppy and berry sorbet color combo. The buttons are stitched directly to the jar. The great part is that the recipient can either leave the card as-is, ORRRR she could take the buttons off and use them on future projects! A teensy little gift that keeps on giving, if she decides to repurpose the buttons! She can "go green"! :)
The papers are from October Afternoon's Fly A Kite and Thrift Shop lines. The "candy" sentiment is from Friendship Jar Fillers. The "Happy birthday" sentiment is from the Enjoy The Ride stamp set and the pretty flourishy image on either side of the sentiment is from Vintage Labels.
And because I couldn't resist making another card with a button jar and more October Afternoon papers, here is Button Jar card #2. :) The truly fun part about this project is picking out the buttons! Admit it -- if you have jars and jars of buttons around like I do, then you know how fun it is to dig thru those buttons and pick out your favorites! So why not put them on a little button jar like this and have an adorable little collection to stare at......or better yet, to give to a friend who can enjoy them too!
The buttons on this one are hawaiian shores, aqua mist, spring moss, ripe avocado and simply chartreuse.
These little button jars also make GREAT gift tags!! How cute would a gift like this be for a crafty friend??? You could go to a local thrift store and pick out a cool old vintage book that she could use for paper crafting. Bring it home, package it up with a cute little button jar tag and watch her face light up when you give it to her! Not only would you be giving her a book of vintage book print that she can craft with, but those pretty little buttons as well!
I stacked two of my treasured vintage books up here and laid a few stitched papers on the top one, tied a bow around it and hung my little tag on the ribbon. The dotty paper is from the Dotty Biscotti collection and in keeping with the book-y theme, I stamped a bit of rustic cream card stock with Background Basics: Text Style II in plum pudding ink. Then, I used some of my own vintage book print to create the little flower with the Beautiful Blooms II #3 die (middle sized die) and added it to the bow's center.
Heck, this gift would even be perfect for a book lover -- someone who isn't going to use the books for paper crafting. Just find a great old book that the recipient would love and package it the same way. It's so easy to "decorate" the cover of the book without adhering anything to the book that might damage the cover. Plus, that way you get to see how pretty it is without hiding it in a gift bag.
As for the two books in the photo, those are treasures of mine. I have a vintage book that I bought for the sole purpose of crafting with. However, over the years, I've bought a few other vintage books including these two, that I couldn't bear to cut up for any reason -- they're just too old and precious. One of these books has a woman's hand-writing in the front....she wrote her name and the year 1916! Hard to imagine that she wrote in that book almost 100 years ago! And the book itself, is copyright 1897!!! Talk about a piece of history. They're a bit like little time capsules. So you can see how this gift would totally work for a book lover too! Old books like these can often be found in flea markets and antique stores for very little money, if you just keep an eye out.
And just so you know, the little button jars fit PERFECTLY inside Papertrey's large hinged tins! Can't you see giving a sweet crafty friend a little tin with a stack of button jars inside!? That's bound to make any crafty soul smile.
And they're also a perfect fit inside Papertrey's small glassine bags! Here, I just added a little strip of raspberry fizz card stock and some dotty biscotti paper as well as a stamped and die cut tag from the Friendship Jar collection!
Goodness, you and all your crafty friends could have little button swaps with these button jars! You could also use them as party favors.....or pop one in the mail to a friend, tucked inside a hand made card. There are just so many things you can do with them and I figure I'd better warn you right now -- I think you're gonna be seeing quite a few button jars around here in the near future! Ha.
Hope you have a fabulous evening, Peeps!
