Hi-ya,
I know that it's now officially autumn so the tomato plants have long since gone by the wayside around here, but I've been meaning to share a bit of fun info with you. You may remember that at the beginning of the summer, I told you that we bought a cute little kitchen scale and decided to weigh all the tomatoes that we harvested off our 4 tomato plants this year. I'm sure there are probably some of you that have just been on pins and needles waiting for me to tell you how many pounds of tomatoes we were able to harvest. :)
First let me tell you that we planted "Better Boy", "Celebrity", "Beef Master", and "Rainbow Heirloom" plants. The Rainbow Heirloom plant blew the others out of the water as to the amount of tomatoes it produced but to be fair, I've heard lots of people say that this was kind of a hard year for tomatoes so all in all, I feel pretty good about all of the tomatoes we were able to enjoy this summer. We would certainly try all of those varieties again.
Our grand total this year was 105 tomatoes totaling 19 pounds!! I love thinking about how much 19 pounds of tomatoes would have cost us at the grocery store, but instead, we were able to enjoy way more flavorful home-grown tomatoes and for just the price of those 4 plants -- around $6!
We've already decided that we'd like to plant a few more plants next year than just 4, so we've selected a different location in the yard where there's lots more room to accommodate our ever-increasing crop. Ha.
Riveting, the things we discuss here at the blog-o. :)
Do you have a favorite variety of tomato? I tend to prefer one with great flavor, not a lot of seeds and not a super thick skin. How about you?
Hope you're having a great day.....
xo,
