Helloooooo there! I've got a fun little project to share with you today!
You may have seen the Grand Finale of the February anniversary festivities at Papertrey this week, which was the group post from the Design Team featuring the new Movers & Shakers die collection. I've since made another fun discovery with one of those dies that I couldn't wait to show you! The Movers & Shakers: Popper (spiral) die can be used to create the rolled flowers that are so popular these days! Pair the die with Papertrey's wool felt and you've got a flowery match made in Heaven. I'm so excited to show you a few variations on these rolled flowers and just how easy they are to put together! And don't you just love it when you can get double duty out of a die and use it for more than it's originally intended use? More bang for your buck!
Firstly, a pretty photo of the work in progress. As you can see in the photo above, there are different sizes of flowers, as well as flowers made from felt and card stock. You can see the paper flower at the bottom of the photo....it's the tiniest, obviously because card stock is a lot thinner than felt. My preference for these flowers is definitely the felt variety, but feel free to try your hand at the paper version if you'd prefer.
So when you die cut the felt, what you end up with is the tight little circle on the right (above). You'll want to go ahead and unroll it completely, like you see on the left.
Next, you'll start with the center circle, and begin wrapping the felt around and around in a tight circle, with each row getting tucked behind the previous row.
When you get to the end, it'll look like this (above) with the final little tab sticking out.
In the photo above, you can see the BACK side of the flower.....simply tuck that final circle tab into the center so that it's back to back with the center tab that we started with.
Now, you have a few options for how to adhere the flowers. You can add a dab of glue (or hot glue) here and there as you wrap the layers. The absolute easiest way to adhere them is to simply run them thru your sewing machine and stitch a straight line thru all the layers like this....
The front side is seen above and below is the back side....
See how nicely the stitching holds everything in place? Very tidy. However, if you don't have a sewing machine or don't love being able to see the stitching on the front of the flower, simply glue the layers together. Either way will work.
Now, the flowers this die creates are a fine size, but suppose you want to vary the sizes of flowers clustered on a card (like the one at the top of this post).... :)
Simply begin wrapping just like we did with the first flower, but when you get it to about the size you want, simply snip off the rest of the spiral and tuck the end of your flower just like we did before.
Buttttttttt........suppose you want a BIGGER flower???? And maybe even one with two colors of felt??????
Simply die cut two pieces of felt (here, I've used pure poppy felt and raspberry fizz felt), stack the two centers together and begin wrapping both layers round and round, just like you would with a single color.
Above, is my two-toned flower in progress.
The nice thing about working with felt is that it sort of sticks to itself, so you can lay your flower down when you need to and it won't uncurl. The beauty of these larger felt flowers is that you can use the Limitless Layers: 1 3/4" circle die to cut another piece of felt on which you can add some glue and simply adhere to the back of the flower, securing everything in place.
For another bit of security (and just because it's so darn cute), I stitched a button thru the center of the flower, all the way thru the back layer of felt. It's just one more measure to make sure the flower doesn't come undone.
And here, I've put three of these little beauties on a card. Tucked behind them are some kraft felt die cut leaves....I used a Turning A New Leaf die for those.
And of course, the background panel is rustic cream card stock stamped with one of my new favorites.....Background Basics: Medallion. The sentiment is from the new anniversary set, Pretty Peonies (another favorite)!
I hope you've enjoyed today's project!! Did you order the Movers & Shakers: Popper collection? Is this spiral die on it's way to you now? Or have you just added it to your wish list? Hee. Any plans to make some rolled felt flowers as soon as you get this die? I'd love to hear from you!
Thanks so much for sharing a bit of your day with me.
