Hello there! Welcome to another day of the Papertrey Countdown! I've got lots more Cutting Garden and Boutique Borders: Mother sneak peeks to share with you! Today, the challenge over at Nichole Heady's blog is all about incorporating watercoloring on a project! I decided to play along and you can too!! Head to her blog for all the details!
All of the new products you're getting peeks at this week will be available for purchase at Papertrey Ink beginning on February 15 at 10pm EST.
Let me be the first to say that watercolor in any form or fashion, requires the "artist" (I use that term very loosely in my case!) to relinquish pretty much all control of the project and just go with it! Haha! Since that is normally not 'how I roll', this watercolor technique was not easy for me! ;) There was a point pretty early on in the project when I thought I was just gonna have to trash it. But then I took a deep breath and reminded myself that it's watercolor. It's WATERCOLOR. It can't be controlled. It doesn't have to be perfect. Or at least, my view of perfect. And so, I went with it. Let me tell you how I achieved this look.
I started with a rustic cream card base and stamped several of the flower, bud and leaf images from Cutting Garden using berry sorbet, pure poppy and ripe avocado inks. Next, I grabbed a cup of water, a paintbrush and the ink refills for those same three colors. I dropped a few drops of ink refill on a plastic surface (a CD case) and then dipped the brush in the water and swirled it in the ink a bit. Keep in mind, the more water, the more you dilute the color. If you want more color, use more ink and less water.
Anyway, I swirled the water/ink mixture on each stamped flower and leaf, matching ink color to stamped image going back in with more water to help 'smear' the stamped images a bit. The end result is a really diluted version of the original stamped image and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.
I splattered on a few droplets of Mister Huey's spray mist in calico white, when it was dry. (To speed up the drying process, I used my heat tool) Lastly, I stamped a sentiment from Cutting Garden on a little scrap of rustic cream card stock and stitched it to the pure poppy card front.
I would totally encourage you to play along with today's watercolor challenge. Even if you don't love the end result, I think it's a good exercise in relinquishing control! Haha! Plus, I think a little crafty experimentation that takes us outside our comfort zone is just good for the soul once in awhile. ;)
Next up, I used a few of the new Zing embossing powders that Papertrey will be carrying, to create this little Boutique Borders: Mother card!
I die cut some berry sorbet card stock with the smallest Mat Stack 6 die and then die cut and stamped a Boutique Borders: Mother frame. (I stamped it with pure poppy ink) As you can see, the Boutique Borders: Mother frame fits perfectly on the Mat Stack 6 die cut!
Next, I turned to good ole Rosie Posie (a favorite around here) and die cut two small flowers and three leaves. I heat embossed them with Zing Embossing Powders in Aqua, Rogue and Leaf (haha!).
Remember that the frames from the new Boutique Borders series don't have to just frame sentiments! They're great for laying behind images as well!
Along the bottom of the rustic cream card base, I stamped one strip of Polka Dot Basics II and heat embossed it with more Aqua Zing and then topped it with a strip of berry sorbet bitty dot paper. The resin flower is one from Kaiser Craft that Papertrey will also be carrying in the store. Lastly, I stamped the "Hello Buttercup" sentiment from my Signature Greetings II stamp set using dark chocolate ink.
One more for you today.....this one showing a little different use for the frame in Boutique Borders: Mother!! I stamped it 4 times (first, stamp a cross with two frames, and then stamp an X over the top with two more frames) to create this fun medallion!
The medallion is stamped in winter wisteria ink and I topped it with a plum pudding button, threaded with rustic jute button twine. Another great use for those large buttons in your stash -- medallion centers!
Under the medallion, I added a strip of striped winter wisteria patterned paper as well as a strip of plum pudding card stock. Stitched over the patterned paper is a strip of adhesive (!) cork (another new Papertrey item!!) that was die cut with the eyelet lace border die. How fun is that?! Side note: Can you just imagine all the cork die cut items you can add to fun cards for school teachers now?!
The Thank You sentiment from Cutting Garden was stamped on the kraft base using dark chocolate ink.
All righty then, I'm off for now, but be sure to visit Nichole Heady and Maile Belles for lots more sneak peeks today. Heather Nichols, Lizzie Jones and Melissa Bickford will have peeks at their new sets as well.
Are there any favorites from this release, that are standing out to you so far? I'd love to hear! Tomorrow will be another fun Countdown day so I'll see you again soon!
Have a goodie!
