It's Stamp-a-Faire day at Papertrey Ink and if you're just tuning in, we're having all sorts of fun paper-crafting challenges all day today! Next up is the Sprinkle of Salt challenge!
Ok, so I must admit this was a new technique for me, but it was so cool to see that salt work it's magic on my watercolored card stock!
I took two different approaches when watercoloring these two pieces of card stock. For the one on the left, I took the Mr. Miagi approach (from Karate Kid). "You painta fence. Side-a side." Haha! I dipped a flat paint brush in water and then in some ink refill (poured into a paint palette) and then brushed it on the card stock from side to side. As I merged from one color to the next, I blended the colors a bit, painting onto the previous color. I used hawaiian shores ink followed by simply chartreuse and ripe avocado at the bottom.
For the card stock on the right, I used a round paint brush and dipped it in water and then coated the entire piece with water first. Then I picked up some ink and dabbed it onto the water on the card stock. This resulted in a more splotchy look. Just depends on whatever look you're going for.
Then, I just sprinkled salt all over the card stock while it was still wet. Set it aside for a bit and let it do it's thing! I probably waited 10-15 minutes (this is a great time to go ahead and work on other elements of the card.....I die cut my hearts, stamped the sentiment strip, cut & scored my card base, that sort of thing) and then brushed all the salt off, into the trash. You'll have to use your finger to brush all that salty dust off your card stock and then I went ahead and heat set with my heat tool, just to help dry the wet card stock a bit faster.
The above photo shows the cool speckled look the salt leaves behind!!
I chose to use one of my pieces of card stock for the background and I die cut leaves and flowers (with the Ruby Rose dies) from the other. The sentiment is from Boutique Borders: Thanks and a few Studio Calico gems finished this one off nicely!
What do you think? Excited to try some salt for yourself? Have fun with this one! Can't wait to see what you create! Head to Nichole Heady's blog to share the link to your project and to be entered to win this hour's big prize!!
