Helloooo! Happy August Countdown Kick-off Day for all you Papertrey fans out there! I'm excited about this month's release....I've got a couple new stamp sets to introduce you to and today, we're gonna start with a new faith-based sentiment and scripture stamp set called New Every Morning, named after the Bible verse that tells us that God's mercies are new every morning! I love, love being able to have some classy and stylish stamps containing Bible verses that I can use for cards, bookmarks, gift tags and more. Not only are they great for encouraging others, but using them and having them stamped in my planner or on a bookmark or whatever, just makes it that much easier for me to remember those verses and be encouraged myself!
All of the new products you're getting peeks at this week will be available for purchase at Papertrey Ink beginning on August 15 at 10pm EST.
This first card was a really fun one to make.....I started out with a piece of watercolor card stock. I used a Zig marker to add some color and then went over it with a water brush to get all that cool texture. Next, I stamped the flowers and leaves (just the outline images) from Garden Grace with raspberry fizz and ripe avocado inks and then went over them with a water brush, being careful not to let the green and pink blend with each other. Then, I pulled out a red Zig as well as another green and just added some highlights, which I blended out with the water brush. This added quite a bit of depth to the otherwise just stamped images.
When that was dry, I stamped one of the sentiments from New Every Morning, using smokey shadow ink and behind the panel, I used the Center Style: Feminine die to add a couple of die cuts at the top and bottom. That color may be my new favorite -- prepare to see a lot of it this week, because it works soooo well with all of the brights that I love so dearly! It's the new Saffron Spice and you can keep an eye out at Nichole's blog for all the details about it, in the days to come. I did want to tell you though, that the Zig Ochre marker coordinates really well with it! Obviously with watercolor, you can create lots of different shades from the same color. So whether or not you want an exact "match" is up to how much water you use. But it definitely coordinates, so I just thought I'd share. My ochre marker came in my 48-pack of markers, so if you've got that set, you're good to go!
And speaking of saffron spice.... ;)
So, also included in the New Every Morning set, are some 3-step flowers -- just a little cluster, but they're great for using as an accent with any of the sentiments or you can create a background pattern like I did here. I love this funky color combo of last month's cocoa bean, tropical teal and saffron spice. I added some old Doodlebug gems to the centers of all the flowers.
The sentiment is one of the smaller ones from New Every Morning and I stamped it on an aqua mist Half & Half die cut, using saffron spice ink. I topped it with a strip of tropical teal card stock and one more little gem.
Ok, so I have a little something new to show you. Let me just say that first and foremost, I designed the New Every Morning stamp set to be used on cards. They're even sized beautifully for stamping on the inside of cards, because of their larger scale. But, I also wanted to design some stamps that would work perfectly for Bible journaling, should that interest you. It's become hugely popular to buy a journaling Bible -- they're specifically sized with a wide margin (usually in the 2" range) for journaling and note taking. However, you've probably seen all over the internet, pictures of all the artwork people are doing in their journaling Bibles. It can be very beautiful and for many, I think it's not just a creative outlet but a form of worship. It's also just a great way to stay in God's Word and by doing something so creative while you're at it, I think it can make it easier to memorize the scriptures you're working with!
All of that being said, I'd been toying with the idea of getting a journaling Bible to stamp in, and finally bit the bullet and jumped in. Now let me just tell you, I bought this Bible with the intention to get it inky! It's not my main study Bible, so I wanted to just give myself the freedom to be creative and allow myself the space to MESS UP sometimes. Because let me tell you, it was a little nerve-wracking stamping that first stamp in my Bible! But once I started adding flowers and got to thinking about how I could literally stamp an entire garden on the pages of this Bible, I got more and more excited! Turns out, it's FUN to stamp in your Bible! Haha! I have a little quirk, in that I don't like to stamp over the actual Bible text, unless it's with a light enough ink that I can still read the text through it. So you won't see me adding layers of gesso and paint and such, all over the print in the Bible. That text is special to me, and even though this isn't my every day, go-to Bible, I do still feel the need to be able to read the print. So you'll see me largely staying in that cute little margin on the side, for the most part. ;) But, I hope to leave you a little bit inspired to add some color to your Bibles, to read some scripture and "hide God's Word in your heart" or maybe to go get yourself a journaling Bible and do some stamping for yourself!
I added the link below, to the exact Bible I have, in case you want to check this one out. It's not expensive, which is a bonus! It's an NIV and I'm really happy with it. Plus, it feels really soft and "flopsy" already, like it's a little bit broken in! That's because it's a "lay-flat" Bible, which is super handy when you're stamping in it! Haha. Gosh though, I sure love the feel of a Bible that just flops open. It's not stiff at all. It kinda feels like someone's already been lovingly reading and studying in it for a little bit. Happy sigh.
So this is another of the verses from New Every Morning, as well as that same little flower cluster. I just stamped a whole bunch of them! And this is another color combo I'm loving with the saffron spice plus tropical teal, cocoa bean, hawaiian shores and new leaf.
Oh, and because I'm guessing some of you are wondering how much bleed through there is, when stamping on these pages, here's the back side of that same page. :) The bleed through doesn't really matter, if you stay in the margin and off the text.
Next up, I used the Make It Market: Garden Gate kit, to add some more flowers. I'm telling you, I'm seriously thinking this Bible is gonna look like one big garden when I'm through with it. And I won't mind that one bit! I stamped this small sentiment from New Every Morning in saffron spice, and then stamped the flowers in pure poppy and raspberry fizz, with saffron spice centers. Another fabulous color combo! Man, I get so inspired when we add a new color.....it just opens up so many new color combo possibilities!
Ok, so for those of you that are thinking, "Bible journaling really isn't my thing, so this post is kinda boring".....I hope you will learn to see these little journal pages as card inspiration, too! If you see something like the page above, you can totally use those same colors or even the same layout and just pop it on a card! Or vice versa.....if you're stamping a card and you love what you did, go stamp the same thing in your journaling Bible while you're at it!! You don't always have to reinvent the wheel! Here, I'll show you what I mean....
I stamped the journaling page and then I thought, "Man, I should really do this on a card", so I did. :) Super simple, right! And then, I decided to make a matching bookmark as well!
I die cut some raspberry fizz with the Noted: Scalloped A1 die, to add some scalloped detail, as well as a thin strip of pure poppy card stock.
The whole thing is popped on a saffron spice card base, to coordinate with the sentiment.
For the bookmark, I changed up the verse, and added one from Hebrews that also talks about the faithfulness of God. It's so simple to create little sets of things like this -- which you can keep for yourself OR give away -- all while you've got one or two stamp sets and a single color combo out.
Again, when you see the page above, you could totally translate this to a card! I used the Floral Sketches stamp set and the pale peony/berry sorbet/pure poppy color combo. However, for the leaves, I wanted to soften them up because I really wanted to use saffron spice and cocoa bean, but they were a bit darker than I wanted. I simply stamped them off once, before stamping them on the page.
When stamping this sentiment from New Every Morning, I inked the top two lines with berry sorbet ink and the bottom two, with pure poppy.
Also, for those of you who are getting a bit curious about stamping in your Bibles, here's a thought about what to stamp where, in terms of the sentiments. You can obviously just stamp the Bible verse on the corresponding page. Sometimes the Bible version I've used for the stamp, will be different than the version you're stamping in and that gives you a great look at a slightly different wording that may give you some added insight into that scripture. You can also stamp a Bible verse on a completely different page, near another verse that directly correlates with it or that maybe builds on a verse from that page. And as in the case above where I wasn't stamping an actual Bible verse at all, I stamped the "choose joy" phrase near a passage of scripture that talks about not worrying and trusting God in our circumstances. And of course, of course (!) you can always add in your own handwritten journaling or thoughts here and there, like I did above.
One other thing to consider, too.....the sentiments can be stamped more than once in various places throughout your Bible. I don't know about you, but I could stamp this "choose joy" phrase fifty times and not one of those reminders would be a bad thing for me to see as I flip through my Bible! :) So don't feel like once you've stamped it once, you can't stamp it again. You totally can!
Did you know that you can also use stencils in your Bible? I did a bit of ink blending with one of the Woodblock stencils here.
Did you also know that it's ok if you stamp something and "mess up" in your journaling Bible? I say this because I know how nerve-wracking it was the first time I stamped in mine and I can just hear some of you.....your wheels are turning and you're thinking you'd be too nervous to mess it up. But you know what? If you're buying a Bible for the "sole purpose" of stamping in it, it's totally ok if it's not perfect! The idea is just to be creative, to enjoy the process and major bonus -- you're spending time in God's Word while you're at it!
And look at what you do if you really mess up and you're not happy with it....
I intended to stamp this Lamentations scripture on the Lamentations page, but instead, I stamped the Matthew verse! Ack! Haha. No worries....I just stamped the Lamentations verse on some linen card stock and adhered it right to the page. Problem solved! So see? You can totally do this....if it's something that you're interested in. And if not, then by all means, use the ideas here, to inspire your card-making!
Ok, this was a looooong post, so I'm off for now, but I hope you've enjoyed your time with me!
Be sure to visit Nichole Heady, Betsy Veldman, Heather Nichols, and Laurie Willison for lots more sneak peeks. Betsy Veldman, Heather Nichols, Erin Lincoln, Kay Miller, Maile Belles, Lizzie Jones and Lexi Daly will have peeks at their new sets as well.
