Hey friends! Today is Throwback Thursday at Papertrey Ink and I've got a fun gift-y project for you! We're pulling out the Tricky Trio dies today, dusting them off and giving them some love! When it comes to craft supplies, I like to be able to use them in lots of different ways, to get the most out of them. When thinking about different ways to use the Tricky Trio dies, I knew I wanted to give you an idea that's a bit more out-of-the-box because you can use these dies in more ways that just with ghosts & ghouls or for kid stuff! I created a gift for a grown-up...a simple little Halloween treat for a friend, because not everyone has kids at home or maybe you don't have any kiddos to craft for, but you might just want bless a friend with a pretty little treat for Halloween! If so, this fits the bill perfectly! After all, grown-ups like candy, too! Let me tell you about this gift I put together with a pair of PRETTY Halloween gift tags, for my jar of candy for a friend.....heavy on the "treat" and no tricks at all!
So let's face it....when we think of Halloween treats, we usually don't think PRETTY, right? We probably think of candy and when we think of fun their packaging, it's often with kids in mind. There's usually a ghost or a pumpkin or something even scarier and there's usually orange and black or maybe even a little purple or green thrown in the mix, too. But for today, I wanted to break that stereotype that any or all of those things have to be incorporated for a Halloween treat! I wanted to show you a way to use these dies you may have had in your stash for several years now, in a way that is more grown-up and elegant, while still being used on some treat packaging for Halloween!
Let's start with the gift.....I got some jars earlier this year, at Walmart. They come from the Pioneer Woman line and they have these gorgeous lids. I used that as my inspiration, and crafted with that color same scheme in mind. Now, of course, if you don't have these jars, you can create a similar look with a regular mason jar -- you can buy them in all different sizes at most big box stores. And you can dress up the lids in lots of different ways. Cover the lid with fabric. Paint the lid. Glue a decorative paper circle to the top. That part is totally up to you, or you might be able to find these same jars or something similar. Just fill them up with whatever candy you think your friend might like. In this case, I used dark chocolate m&ms because....well, I love 'em. Haha.
Next, I wanted to create a pair of tags. I don't know what it is, but if one tag is cute, two stacked tags is usually cuter! lol. So, I pulled out the Made With Love 1 tag dies, as well as my beloved Tag Sale #12. As usual, that darn tag sale #12 ended up being the perfect size to hold the Tricky Trio die cut I chose to work with! That die has been worth it's weight in gold to me!
I popped the Tricky Trio die cut from cocoa bean card stock, onto a saffron spice tag. Next came the part when I looked to the lid for my inspiration, and I pulled out my Farmer's Market Florals. I stamped them in colors that coordinate with the lid. For the little turquoise flowers, I stamped them in hawaiian shores topped with tropical teal and then olive twist -- that's a new color combo for me, and I really love how it looks. I added a single bloom as well as few leaves, right on top of the Trick or Treat die cut.
HERE'S A TIP FOR YOU: The leaves from Farmer's Market Florals were just a bit larger than the space I had to work with on that sentiment die cut, so I took the three-leaf cluster, and cut the leaves apart. This allowed me to use a single -- smaller now -- leaf on the right of the flower, and I cozied the two remaining leaves that I'd snipped apart, up closer and in a straighter "line" than how they were originally. Don't be afraid to cut and rearrange little die cuts as needed to suit your project!!
After I assembled all the pieces on the tag on the right, I added a few adhesive gems to the tag and then.......I pulled out that trusty gold embellishing mousse again! I used an ink blending tool, to dab into the paste and then swipe all around the edges of the tag. It just adds a bit of shine, and really kicks it up a notch! It's so pretty in real life!
For the tag on the left, I die cut the Made With Love tag, as well as a piece of saffron spice scrap paper with the Mix & Mat: Plaid die. Spray adhesive made it easy to glue that in place, and then I added a variety of florals and leaves with foam adhesive for dimension. The larger flower is stamped in bright buttercup first, and topped with a saffron spice layer that was stamped off first, as well as saffron spice on the top layer, at full strength. I finished that tag off, by also swiping some embossing mousse around the edges.
HERE'S ANOTHER TIP FOR YOU: I didn't have three shades of yellow inks in exactly the colors I wanted, so I just used two colors. But because I needed to stamp three separate layers, I stamped off the middle layer first to lighten up that saffron spice a bit. This way, I achieved the look of three distinct colors, while only using two ink pads!
